Loaded Turmeric Latte

Who doesn’t enjoy a good latte?  This latte spin off is dairy free, refined sugar free, and loaded with healing ingredients (hence the name).

Turmeric is an herb that comes from the same family as ginger (zingiberaceae family).  It is the spice that gives curry a beautiful yellow color.  In this recipe we will use fresh ginger root to create a  beautifully colored drink packed with medicinal properties.  Turmeric is full of constituents called curcuminoids, the most studied of which is curcumin.  These are flavonoids (plant chemicals) which act as antioxidants and are highly anti-inflammatory .

Benefits of turmeric/curcumin:

  • Anti-inflammatory.  Fights against chronic inflammation, which has been linked to many diseases.
  • This is especially helpful in conditions with inflamed joints (such as arthritis, tendonitis, or even sprains).
  • Has a protective effect on the cardiovascular system.
  • Powerful antioxidant.  Fights free radicals (“bad guys” in the body).
  • Many studies have shown that curcumin may prevent and even treat cancer.
  • Improves mood and increases brain hormone (BDNF) which fights degenerative diseases in the brain.

You may have heard that the piperine in black pepper increases the absorption of curcumin.  This is true, and is the reason I have included a pinch of black pepper in the recipe (plus I like the taste!).  However, there are tons of other constituents in turmeric that are super beneficial for the body and do not require black pepper for absorption.  No need to get flustered about needing to add black pepper every single time you consume turmeric.  But if you want to include black pepper, great!
Other ingredients I’ve included:

  • Ginger, another anti-inflammatory root, also a tummy soother.
  • Cinnamon, which will help regulate blood sugar levels, with regular use.  Find ceylon cinnamon (or “true” cinnamon) for all the herbal benefits.
  • Vanilla powder, improve mental performance and mood boosting.
  • Cardamom, because a touch of creamy cardamom makes everything better!
  • A dash of raw honey for sweetness.
  • Coconut oil to create the froth and increase absorption of curcumin (it is fat soluble, aka absorbed best alongside fats).

Loaded Turmeric Latte

A dairy-free turmeric latte loaded with healing herbs.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond mylk
  • 1 tsp fresh turmeric finely minced or micro grated
  • Pinch fresh ginger finely minced or micro grated
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp cinnamon depending how much you like cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla powder
  • Pinch black pepper
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients, except coconut oil, into a pot on the stove. Heat the almond mylk slowly, without boiling. 

  2. Once milk is heated to your liking, remove from heat. Add the coconut oil and transfer to a blender (or use an immersion blender), whirl the latte for a minute or so. This will create that beautiful “frothed milk” effect. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

*Note- powdered turmeric and powdered ginger can be substituted.  If you don’t have any vanilla powder around, simply disclude or add a tiny splash of vanilla extract.
